3 December 1880 — Florence
Friday. 3rd December [1880]. Not feeling very well I stayed in all the morng. Henry went out for a walk. I wrote &c. Abt 1 Sir James Hudson called—looking very well & in as great spirits as ever– He was very cordial & chatted about Eastern affairs &c & what the Govt was going to do for Henry & he inveighed against the F.O. in general. Then in came Spence perè & after Mr Colnaghi the Consul Genl. They all talked & then Sir James & Colnaghi went away & Spence lunched with us & then we went out with him to his old appartment & saw a lot of rubbishy pictures he has for sale. Henry & I walked to Mrs Sloanes’; we did not find her in & left cards but met the Turkish Consul Genl. Mr Smith at her door. He presented Mrs Smith to us she is a Spaniard. We last saw Mr Smith at Consple. He used to come & beg Henry to help him to get the Porte to reinstate him in the Consul Genl.ship wh had been abolished. As the Porte owed S. a lot of money they at last did so. On the way home we went into the Duomo. The facade is at last being faced with marble. The simplicity of the interior tho rather cold, charmed me—no saints or virgins or R Catholic tawdryness– There was an afternoon service going on with the Gregorian chants we often hear in our own churches. We went home & rested till dinner. Dined in table d’hôte room at 7. After dinner I made cigarettes for Henry. Mr Campbell Spence called. Played dominos. Bed early.
