6 December 1880 — Florence
Monday. 6th December [1880]. We went off after breakfast to the Pitti Palace & spent all the morning over the pictures. We walked back thro’ the tapestry gallery instead of thro’ the streets as we came home. Lovely weather. Hot sun but cold in the shade. Mr & Mrs Ross came in from Castagnolo to lunch with us. We found the Galloways at lunch at the same time. After lunch Sir James Hudson called & we also sat chatting together. When they left Henry & I walked out to Mme Ferraud’s to buy a bonnet. Got one & then went on in a cab to leave cards on Mons: Vigliani, Sir James Lacaita &c. Henry brought me home to rest & went on to leave a card on the Duke of Sermoneta. We went to dine with Mrs Sloane & met the Turkish Consul Genl. & his wife, Mr & Mrs Smith & a Mr FitzGerald a disconsolate Irish landlord. After dinner I had a long talk with Mrs Smith & she told me how badly the Bourtourlin family had behaved to Mrs Sloane abt Mr Sloane’s will that they had already squandered the whole fortune & there was no doubt they had got Mr Sloane to make the will when he was childish. She said that it is said in the first will Mr Sloane had left Carreggi to Henry, wh I think not unlikely. Mrs Sloane gave Henry a large folio book as a remembrance of old Mr Sloane & poured out all her griefs to him. It appears that the Bourtourlins are now so hard up that they often have difficulty in paying Mrs Sloanes pension. The report is that the late Ct Bourtourlin was really Mr Sloane’s son & that is why he persuaded him to leave the money to his second son—but this is more than doubtful.
