10 February 1881 — Rome
Thursday. 10th February [1881]. Went with Henry to the Villa Campana & he sat for his bust to Mr Wood while I began to make a portrait of a girl the daughter of Luigi Mr Wood’s head workman. We returned home to luncheon. The Villa Mantillas came to fetch me & we went to a shop & then I took them to Mme Cairoli to introduce them to her. Met there Mrs Bigelow the wife of the Author of the Bigelow Papers. On leaving Mme Cairoli we went to drive in the Borghese gardens which I had not seen– They are just outside the Piazza del Popolo & are most lovely—a great many people were driving there & amongst them the King. M. & Mme Castellani of Venice called also Mr Jervois after 5. Mr Jocelyn also turned up. We dined at the Minghettis & met Morelli, Bonghi, Barraco, Css Doenhoff (Mme Minghetti’s daughter), Prince Teano. Minghetti had made a long speech in the chambers & was very tired. We had a pleasant eveng & after dinner I had a long talk abt the Odo Russell with Css Doenhoff. Mrs Mark Patterson came in for a short time in the eveng. She was affected & pedantic.
