12 February 1881 — Rome
Saturday. 12th February [1881]. We had arranged with the Minghettis to go this morng to see the Crypt of St Peters & Morelli came early to say we cd not get in without an order– Lady Bagot came in the morng to see us & sat talking some time. My dress arrived from Paris for the Quirinal Ball. At 2 we went to the Palace & had an Audience with the Queen. Marquesa Villa Marina received us & we had very short time to wait. H.M. was in black silk—& looked very pretty. She made me sit on the sofa by her side & talked to us in English very fluently & even fast—almost too quick. She wore a great deal of jewelry rings bracelets &c almost too much. She talked abt books & kept us for abt ¾ hour. Came home changed my dress & went to pay some visits found old Penry Williams at home & saw his studio. He showed us a sketch of an Italian model begun in his studio by Boxall a most lovely head unfinished. Found Mme Pantaleoni at home & met there Mme Pagliacarne & her daughter. Dined at home. The Mantillas called for us & took us to the Apollo Theatre. We heard the Figlia di Regimento & a dreadfully noisy Ballet abt Napoleon in wh there were battles & shooting & firing. Glad to get away home. The prima donna did not sing badly (all the rest of the troup were horribly bad). She played very well on the drum & was encored.
