15 February 1881 — Rome | |
Tuesday. 15th February [1881]. I went off alone to the Studio & came back to lunch at 1. Mme Mantilla called while we were at lunch to bid us goodbye as they started at 2.40 for Madrid. The change of Govt obliges them to return at once to see to their affairs. At 3 went out for a drive with Henry. Called on Mrs Marsh & found her at home & in the midst of Turkish Embroidery which my mother had sent her to sell. Left cards on Mrs Murphy at the Minerva Hotel. She is a rich American R.C. who is giving a ball tomorrow at wh all the Blacks will be present. We were invited to her ball by Dr Smith but we do not think of going. Went in to the church opposite to see the frescos by Philippo Lippi in a chapel there. Dined at Mr Bruce at 8. Met D. & Dss Marino, Css Jewouska, Mr & Lady A. Murray, Col. & Mrs Highnam, Monsigr Howard, the D. de Ripalda, Mr Hamilton Aidé. The latter took me to dinner & Ripalda sat on my left & was as tiresome & pretentious as ever—talking pityingly of English aristocracy & saying Gladstone was of “une famille bourgeoise.” Card. Howard is a great big man & very pleasant. Had a long talk with him in the eveng abt the East & Russia. He is antirussian & well up in Eastern affairs as he has the direction of all that part of the Pope’s subjects. We went on to a party at Mme Keffenbrink’s. Found mostly Germans there. Met Mrs Bagot & was told by her that the end of the Ouida-Stufa scene at Mrs Story’s was that Ouida put her chair right in the door way & Stufa made a desperate rush at the door & nearly knocked over Ouida chair & all & so got away. In talk of Ouida the other night the Queen said that Ouida’s attacks on Stufa were very ridiculous & that she often teased him abt it & that he cd not bear her– | |
