6 September 1881 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 6th September [1881]. Modelled all the morng & Matilda sat to me. Directly after luncheon went out with Henry. We went to the Mostra of Geographical Exhn to the English, Russian & Swedish department. Saw Capt. Baird’s machine for registering the tides at work– The Swedish collection of things brought by the Vega in her expedition to the North– The skeleton of an extinct kind of seal &c &c. Went leaving cards & paid a visit to Biondetti the sculptor & saw his collection of specimens of marbles & woods which is very large & one of the finest private collections in Italy. He is a very intelligent man & his son seemed so also. I came home & read & Henry went to see Mr Brown. When he came in I went to his room & stuck in despatches till dinner time. After dinner we played cribbage & at 10 went upstairs & I copied something for Henry while he read till bedtime.
