9 September 1881 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 9th September [1881]. Breakfast at 9 downstairs. Matilde sat to me & I modelled till lunch time & Mrs Burr sat with me drawing. Lunch at 1.30. Mrs Eden called directly after lunch specially to see Mrs Burr. Then M. Poulsky came & Henry showed him all our pictures which pleased him & he was especially delighted with our large bit of tapestry. He is the Director of all the galleries at Perth & a very distinguished man– A thunderstorm threatened us but it did not come. Henry went out at 3 to write our names at the Palace & returned at 4 & fetched me & the Burrs & we went for a row round the Giardin Publico, the Arsenal & the Fondamenta nuove. There was a splendid sunset after we got home. Dined at 7. Mr Malcolm dined with us. In the evening had a visit from Monsignor Zanetti—the Marcello’s chaplain. He remained chatting sometime. Played cribbage with the Squire & he beat me & then with Henry & I beat him. Had a note from Mrs Murphy whom Dr Smith had introduced to me & with whom I had exchanged cards at Rome, London & here without ever having seen. She wrote to beg me to have an hour to receive her. She is a rich Irish American & as her husband gives large sums to the Pope he ordered the clerical party to introduce her into society. She gave a ball at the Minerva Hotel at Rome to wh all the blacks went.
