11 September 1881 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 11th September [1881]. I went with the Squire & Mrs Burr to the service at the Palazzo Conterini & we got very late & came away before the sermon. Left the Squire at M. de Pilat’s the Austrian Consul. He had promised to go & teach him to make trout flies. I took Mrs Burr on to Mrs Edens & left her to make a visit & then went home & began pasting despatches in the book till lunchtime. The Squire returned to luncheon. Directly after lunch Mr Malcolm called for Henry & took him to see some paintings &c on sale & I continued pasting till he returned & then Mrs Burr & I went out with him in the gondola. The Squire having gone out for a walk. We went round by the Canareggio outside the railway station by the Abazia to see the outside of the chapel wh is very ruinous & will be pulled down by the owner & the things sold. It is where Mr Malcolm had taken Henry. We came in & I went on pasting till dinner time & finished the 1st vol. in the eveng before bed time. Had a visit from the Marquis d’Azeglio who has arrived here for the fêtes & sat talking a long time in the Belvedere. We dined at 7 & in the evening played 4 handed cribbage & went early to bed.
