13 September 1881 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 13th September [1881]. I spent the morning at work at modelling. After luncheon Henry took me & Mrs Burr to the Academia to see the Exhibition of old things & the modern manufacturies. The old pictures were not very remarkable excepting 2 Tiepolos belonging to the Papadopolis & the Giovanelli Giorgone– There was some armour & some Armenian MSS of our lending & some Nineveh marbles. Cortelazzo had his things there amongst them our plate & vase. Came home & had some tea. Had a visit from M. de Pilat who came to show the Squire that he had learnt to make flies for trout fishing. Css Mocenigo also came & stayed talking some time. She seems very intelligent & is very simpatico & well dressed. She is very anxious to know some of the savants & to go with some one to the Geographical Exhn who understands it. I promised to let her know when we next went. Soon after we had a visit from Genl. di Cesnola the discoverer of the Cyprus Treasures. He is an Italian by birth but now an American citizen & speaks English fluently with an American twang mixed with a foreign accent. He is a good looking florid stout man. He brought with him a Genl. Crawford (American) who seemed charming—very gentlemanly & accomplished. He had been a great deal in England & knew a good many people there. You would have taken him for an English military man. Henry, Mrs Burr & I dined at 7 the Squire being kept upstairs by his gout. At 9 Henry & Giovi went off in the gondola to meet Lord Aberdare, Miss Lena, Miss Sarah & Mr W. Bruce as they arrived here from the Cadore abt 10. They had some supper & at 11 we went to bed.
