16 September 1881 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 16th September [1881]. We breakfasted at 9 & afterwards Henry & the Bruce party went out. I remained at home & arranged the drawing rooms for this evening’s party. At 11 I went off to Css Marcello’s to get some Burano lace to try & sell and also to get a list of the Venetians to ask to my party on 21st. I did not stay very long as she had people come to lunch with her. I wrote some cards till lunch. After lunch Henry & Bruces all went off to the Academy Exhibition & on to the Lido. I remained at home to put things in order &c. Last night Marquis Dragonetti had told us that the Duke of Aosta was coming to call on us & we promised to remain at home all the afternoon– But at 2 Henry got a letter from Dragonetti saying the Prince would not be able to come & we were not to expect him so we both went out & when we returned, to our dismay we found that his Highness had been during our absence. Giovanni explained to him that we had only gone out after that letter & it then appeared that D. had not told the Duke he had written & of course the Duke saw that it was D’s fault. I got home about 20 minutes after & was very vexed. Before I went out Css Olga Mocenigo came to see me & we sat & talked some time. Mrs Eden also came to see the Squire. We dined in the middle hall & Mr Colnaghi dined with us. In the evening we had a small evening party. The blind Duke & the Dss of Sermoneta were the first to arrive– We had also a few Italians & some English & American & as celebrities, Dr Nachtigal, Capt. Burton, Sir Henry Thompson, Genl. de Cesnola & Chief Justice Daly—& his wife a charming handsome old lady very distinguished looking. Tea & ices were served in the dining room & everybody seemed to enjoy themselves. They did not remain very late & soon after 12 we went to bed.
