20 September 1881 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 20th September [1881]. Henry took the Bruce party out to see some churches &c & I remained in. Mrs Greville Nugent & Lady George Gordon Lennox came to see me. Lady G. is a handsome widow & very well off. She has ordered some Burano lace whereby she won my heart—but her appearance is against her. She paints her face & dyes her hair a gold colour but she has still a fine figure & traces of beauty. After lunch being rather tired & headachy I made up my mind to go out & not remain in for visitors so I went out with the whole party in 2 gondolas. Went to the V. & Murano & all went in but I & Morelli we went on together to leave some cards & notes & then went back & picked the others up. We took a row a little way towards the Gardens & then went back home. Sir Henry & Kate Thompson dined with us—so we were 10 at dinner. In the evening Henry & I & the Bruces went off to Princess Giovanelli’s. She gave a great party to all the “Congressisti” and there were a great quantity of people there Venetians & foreigners. The house is a regular large fine Venetian Palace tho done up in rather a bad French style. However every one was delighted and I was very glad that Venice society should have done something for the foreigners. I believe if Andriana Marcello & I had not laid our heads together & got the Sindaco to work at the Princess she would not have given the party. There was a concert given in the Ball room. Signor Pucci & his daughter sang—there was also a fiddler & pianist & an organ grinder (harmonium). We left before the music was half over & got home abt 1. It was very hot there & we were tired.
