22 September 1881 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 22nd September [1881]. I spent rather an idle morng being very tired. Henry & Lord Aberdare went to the closing seance of the Congress & the latter made a speech in French. They had to go early so breakfasted at 8. I & Mrs Burr & the rest of the Bruces breakfasted at 9.30. At 12 we lunched & at 12.30 a steam launch came for us & we made an expedition taking with us Countess Marcello, Theresa & Pino, Countess Olga Mocenigo, Signor Castellani, Signor Vavalloni & his daughter. We towed 2 gondolas as there was not room for all in the launch. We went first to Murano—landed & went to see the glass blowing at the V. & Murano works. Prince Teano & Dr Nachtigal met us there & also saw it. We tried to get into the church to see the picture by Bellini but it was closed. We went on to Burano & as we left Murano the Bissone came out to meet us that had been made by V. & Murano Co for the Regatta & looked very pretty as it dashed past us. We landed at Burano & went straight to the lace school & inspected what they were doing & M. Cavaglione bought & ordered a lot of lace to the amount of 1600 fcs. The other gentlemen were amused & interested in looking at the girls working & admiring them—there were many very handsome ones with the regular Venetian type & their hair most picturesquely done. We were obliged to hurry on & to leave as we had to get on to Torcello. We met the 2 gunboats full of “Congressisti” & 3 other Lido steamers crammed with people. As soon as we arrived at Torcello everybody landed but myself. I remained & called in our Beppi the gondolier & we warmed up the coffee I had brought & it was ready just as the party returned to the boats & I served it out before we started. Everybody was tired & hungry & the coffee was most acceptable & all praised it immensely & we had eno’ for all 15– Prince Teano & Nachtigal having joined our party from Murano. The weather had been threatening all day but perhaps it was all the pleasanter than a blazing sun. As we returned home a storm got up in the distance it lightened & blew a little & we were glad of our wraps. It was past 7 when we got in & Nachtigal was rather in a state as he was engaged to dine out at 6.30. Css Marcello & Theresa & Prince Teano remained to dinner with us & Css Olga Mocenigo went home dressed & returned & dined also with us so that we were 12 at dinner & had a pleasant eveng. Css Olga had to leave very early to take her sister in law to the theatre but Pino Marcello came– We sang a ten chorus & were very merry.
