10 February 1882 — 3 Savile Row
Friday. 10th February [1882]. A long talk with Luff & Monty as they had their breakfast together. Mrs Burr called & we had a long chat. Then Susan & Mr Hambro came in to say they expected us to dinner at 6 to go to the Pantomime with them. When I got up in the morng I fancied I felt a pimple on my back & was afraid it would get worse & develope into a boil. Mrs Bagot came to luncheon with me & talked tremendously as is her wont. I had rather a headache & found it not easy to bear. After lunch I lay on the sofa while she poured forth all horrors & scandal she could think of till I was in a maze. She told me there had been a scene between the P. & Pss of Wales à propos de Mrs Langtry– The day Mrs L. made her first attempt for a charity, the P. & Pss were both there & the P. went behind the scenes to see Mrs L. Each time the P. returned to the box the Pss looked blacker– At length she burst forth with “It is not necessary that you shd go to visit Mrs Langtry & I do not like it.” At wh the P. withdrew his chair & began talking to no one of the suite. As soon as they all reached home & had got into the drawing room the Pss pent up wrath exploded & there was a regular scene before the household—& I admire the poor little Pss for holding her own– Just as Mrs Bagot left me Lady Ely arrived & was very nice & affectionate. Henry luckily came in too and we had a long talk. Lady Ely said that the D. of Connaught was frantic with Lady Paget for the rudeness he said she showed to the Crown Pss of Germany—& the latter also abused her pretty well to the Queen. She said that Lady Paget could not paint a bit & she told the Queen that Lady P. had painted a dreadfully bad picture of H.M. for the ball room at wh H.M. said “No really my dear, has she?” Lady Ely said that the Queen constantly lamented the bad treatment Henry had been subjected to and said H.M. was dreadfully worried about the state of affairs. We asked Lady Ely what the Queen would think of the speech Gladstone made last night almost promising Home rule to the Irish members. She said “Oh Gladstone wont care what the Queen thinks about it.” She says the Queen does not care for Lady Paget because of her stiff manners & her grimaces & she said “She gives herself such airs does Ly Paget. She makes even me feel quite small.” Dressed & went off to dine with Susan at 6—but I could not eat having still a headache. We went to the Drury Lane Pantomime & it was most amusing. Mr West joined us there & Nety & Miss Stevens went with us. There was one very pretty scene of old London with a comic Lord Mayor’s procession wh finished with John Bull & Jonathan (England & America) coming forward & shaking hands on wh the innumerable people in the background who had formed the procession waved English & American flags. It brought the house down– We all returned to Savile Row for supper at 11—& Monty joined us & abt 12 we broke up.
