28 March 1882 — 3 Savile Row
Tuesday. 28th March [1882]. Cornelia came in the morning & we gave her a lot of letters of introduction for Spain—to wh country they are bound to & leave today at 2. Henry & I went out driving this afternoon. We went first to Blanche to offer May Ponsonby a Bach Choir ticket. I ran after a moment & found Eda Ashley there– May wd not have the ticket but she recommended me a housemaid as I have decided to send Anne Spalding away. We went to Eton Park Road to call on Sir Charles & Lady Layard & found them both in & paid them a visit—then on to Sir Wm Drake’s– He was better & received both of us. Mrs Sam Bircham was sitting with him but left after a little while. Sir Wm was certainly better but he walks feebly & the skin of his hand seemed all blistered & irritable. I left Henry there that he might go on to the Bach Choir practice & I went home to tea. Mr Burton came to see Henry & not finding him left word with me that he wd return tomorrow to take him to see some pictures on sale. Henry & I dined with the Burrs. A pleasant dinner—Mr & Lady Anne Blount, Sir Joseph & Lady Hooker, Lady Lyttleton, Mr Fergusson & Mrs Holland, Browning & Miss Browning was the party. Mr Blount took me to dinner & was very cross & silent or spoke in jerks. I could not make much of him. Luckily I had Mr Fergusson on the other side of me. The great topic of conversation was the D. of Westr engagement to Miss Cavendish, L. Chesham’s daughter. The Duke’s daughter married Miss Cavendish’s brother so the relationship will be complicated. The Duke has been a widower little more than a year & there had been reports that he intended marrying the Dsse de Lucques. After dinner Mrs Holland asked to be introduced to Mr Blount as she was such an admirer of his poems so he became happier & had a kindred spirit to talk to.
