27 October 1882 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 27th October [1882]. Got up with a headache. Hill washed my hair. D. Federico Madrazo came to see me & to give me hints about my medallion. Cortelazzo also came to call. He is staying at Pension Suisse with the Brackens. I could not work—laid down & slept. After lunch we went over to Mocenigo house & walked from there to the Morosini house with Olga who had obtained permission from old Mme Morosini Gattenburg to take us to see it. It is almost the last Venetian house kept unchanged since the Old Republic. In the hall are old gallery lamps & arms– In the rooms are pictures of the Gt Adl’s victories. A museum with trophies & curiosities brought by the Adl. Amongst other things his prayer book wh contains in the binding a tiny pistol that he might be able to defend himself against assassination. The pictures are of all kinds bad & good. One interesting Holy Family signed Pietro [illegible word]. Some portraits of Doges & Senators of the Morosini & Grimani families. One room is entirely hung with fine Venetian cut velvets. In one room are fine portraits by Bernadino Strozzi & a soi disant Titian. One room is panelled with documents relating to the family. The present owner is the last of the name—very old & almost bed ridden– It is thought she will leave the house & its contents to the city. We went from here altogether to the Stab. We left Olga at Css Thun’s & then Mildred & I went home & sent the gondola back for Henry with the felze on as it was raining hard. I had to lie down & get warm when I came in. Cortelazzo came to tea– Cribbage.
