4 December 1882 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 4th December [1882]. Mildred got up early and I went to see her prepare to start. I was not dressed & only went to her room. At 8.15 her mother called for her in a gondola & took her off to Verona– I spent the morning in tacking the flowers on the curtain. In the morning the others went out, I remained at home & practised harmonium. At 1.30 we went off to Murano to see the glass works going and it was very amusing. As they had only begun to work for the first time at 12 today there was a good deal of confusion but it was marvellous to see how the small boys picked up ideas & fell into the work. Everything is made in moulds & by division of labour & the men are paid by the piece so that it is their object to make as many pieces a day as they can– As we came home it began to snow heavily & was very cold—so that we were glad to get home.
