26 December 1882 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 26th December [1882]. Finished my fan border this morning. In afternoon went out walking with Henry. We explored a new road to us towards the station on this side the Grand Canal & then round again to the Academy over the iron bridge to the Piazza & found the gondola at the Piazzetta & came straight home in it. Read till tea time & talked to Henry. Wrote letters after tea. Dined at 7.30. At 9 went to Mrs Bronsons to see the dress rehearsal of 2 little pieces—one in French played by Idita Hurtado & Mlle Cecile Zanini—the 2nd an English piece by three young ladies, Miss Bronson—Idita, & Mlle Olga Montenegro. After these Sigr Kirchmayr & Mr Wood 2 artists prepared some tableaux vivants. P. Gagarin did Hadji Baba & it was very successful. There was an empty gold frame stretched with black gauze & behind that people posed. I dressed Miss Zanini as a Spaniard. Idita did a Japanese girl. I was dragged into it as a russian peasant– Mr Kirchmayr did a Velasquez man portrait, Mr Wood a Rembrandt Dutchman with a pipe. They were very pretty & successful. We did not get home till 12 o’cl– A lovely moonlit night.
