14 October 1883 — Castagnolo
Sunday. 14th October [1883]. Sat talking most of the morng in the little sitting room off the hall with Mr & Mrs Ross. Lunched at 1 & afterwards sat out in the garden. Mr & Mrs Colnaghi & 2 daughters came down to lunch from Florence. Afterwards Henry & I & Mr Ross & Mr Colnaghi walked to the Villa Tassinari to call on Sir Ed. Thornton (H.M. Ambr at St Petersburg) & Lady Thornton who were staying there. Mme Tassinari being Sir Ed’s sister. Mr Ross left us at the door. We found a large party assembled at croquet & were taken into a small room where Lady Thornton joined us. They were both looking ill & worn & complained much of the climate of St Petersburg. We returned to Villa Stufa accompanied by young Mr Spence who was at Villa Tassinari. After resting awhile we set out again to walk to the Villa Janet accompanied by Mr Ross to call on the Dowr Duchess of Sermoneta. We found everyone out & the house locked up. At last the cook was found & took charge of our cards & we walked back to Villa Stufa. Had a game of lawn tennis. Mrs Ross & I against Signor Carlo Orsi & Hy, we lost—& then came in to tea. The Dss of Sermoneta came soon after to see us & stayed abt an hour. The Marcheses two other nephews came to stay with him, 2 lads of 16 & 17—brothers of the one who was here before.
