24 October 1883 — Castagnolo
Wednesday. 24th October [1883]. Henry wrote to tell Giovanni that we wd not ask him to remain 3 months & would find another man by 1st Decr. I sat all the morning with Mrs Ross learning & puzzling out sundry old stitches for embroidery. After lunch Mr Peter Wells was kind eno’ to drive Henry & me to Poggia Caiano the villa where Bianca Capello died & her husband. It has been so much restored & altered that there is nothing old left abt it. The drive was a pretty one & we returned by another road under the villa called Artemino & by the Laparilli Pitti villa. Had tea on our return & wrote letters. Dined at 7. In the evening Della Stufa sat with Mrs Ross & me talking of the Italian Royal family—praising the Queen & telling how when the new Dss of Genoa arrived first in Italy she had no proper dresses & the Queen had to send for “La Borla” her dressmaker at Rome & have a dress made for the Dss in 24 hours.
