Friday. 9th [November 1883]. Practised guitar & at 11 had guitar lesson with Miss Bronson. After lunch I remained in. Henry took out the Kennedys. I had visit from a Mrs & Miss West introduced to me by Lady Gregory. Mrs W. had been pretty but is now very stout. The girl pretty. Had tea in the studio. Dr Cini came, pronounced Mrs Kennedy’s maid better & said I had catarrh intestinale, & ordered me bismuth powders. Ersilia Canevaro came to see me & had tea & remained some time. Mrs Bronson came also & Mr & Miss Browning & remained some time all in the studio. Dined at 7.30. There was much talk abt the simultaneous suicide of 3 girls here abt 10 days ago. It is said they were of middle class. The eldest abt 30. One of them had bad eyesight. They took the last steamer to the Lido (abt 5.30) walked across to the open sea & threw themselves in. The body of one only has been found as yet. | |
