12 February 1885 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Thursday. 12th February [1885]. London is such a rush I cannot get on with my journal & I pick up the thread here. Mr Vigor came to go on with my portrait & after I had had a talk with Luff & been down to the kitchen &c I got up stairs & sat to Mr Vigor till 1. The girl brought the tame budgerigah as promised soon after 12 & at 1 Luff came in & took leave of me & carried off the bird which I sent as a present for Benjamin Lady Westr’s footman in return for a bullfinch he gave me. Mr Vigor brought in news of a battle in the Soudan & death of General Earle—altho we had a victory. It is too terrible all this loss of life & all for what object? Every body seems aghast. At 1 I went to No 15 to see Blanche & the new baby who is her No 5 & my mothers 40th grandchild. I only stayed ½ hour having to return to lunch. Fred Layard came in before we had done lunch to say his son Arthur had been ordered from Gibraltar to Suakin. Did my household accounts & then at 3 Alice & I went out driving. First to Langham House. I found Mama still in bed & so unusual I persuaded her to let me fetch Dr Fuller. I went to him but as he was out I went on for Lady Stanhope’s & found she received having been confined of her 2nd son abt 3 weeks. She looked very pretty on the sofa. Her beautiful plaits of hair making a frame to her face. Went back to Fuller—found him at home and arranged to meet him at Mamas at 5. Went on to call on Mrs Drummond who was wonderfully bright & well– Met there Mrs Kegan Paul & Mr Henry Reeve– All kind of lamentations over the news. The Drummonds knew poor Mrs Earle & all feel dreadfully for her. When I got to Langham House found Fuller had just got there. I said Mama was feverish & has probably a chill. I sat with & read to her till shortly before dinner. Alice went to dine at Connie’s & Henry & I dined tête à tête. After dinner I went back to Langham House but findg Mama asleep I returned home. Played organ for ½ hour. Edward came & played billiards with Henry & I came up to bed early being very tired.
