7 April 1885 — Inwood, Henstridge, Somerset
Tuesday. 7th [April 1885]. Theo, Maria, Mrs Collins, Richard, Luff, Henry & I went off by 12 o’cl train to Salisbury. There a waggonette was ready & drove us to Lord Radnor’s Longford Castle. We got there abt 2. The park was very pretty & the river was close to his Castle which is triangular in shape with huge towers at his angles. Lady Gertrude Bouverie the only unmarried daughter received us very kindly & had with her her sister Lady Anne Speirs & another lady. Lord Radnor was out. After luncheon we were in admiration of the lovely things in the house & the beautiful order every thing was in—the pictures were wonderful– There is a very fine Moroni & 2 Velasquez & several Holbeins. Some of the galleries have lovely furniture & hangings of Venetian cut velvet– There is china—enamels & every kind of interesting things—notably a splendidly worked steel chair made at Augsburg for the Emp. Maxmillian II a unique piece of work. After going over the house Lady Gertrude took us into the garden & green houses wh were not extra fine. At 4 we had to drive back to Salisbury & to catch our train to return home wh we did by abt 6 o’cl. Mr & Mrs Digby Collins dined at Inwood.
