10 August 1885 — Lucerne
Monday. 10th [August 1885]. Took a carriage & left Lucerne at 8 to drive to Meiringen. We went along the lake as far as Alpnach & thence up the valley & over the Brunig pass. At                we lunched & found table d’hôte going on. It was so full that we were put 8 in a tiny sitting room & were waited upon by an energetic strong loquacious Swiss woman in costume. Most of the people we met here were going on to the Lake of Brunig so that when we turned off to Meiringen we got out of the crowd. Went to the Sauvage Hotel. Excellent & well situated. After dinner the waterfall opposite the hotel was illuminated with Bengal lights for which we were each (Annie included) charged 50c in the bill willy nilly. We met a gentleman & Lady at dinner who hearing me speak of the Colliers said they were also going up to see them at Rosenlaui tomorrow.
