12 August 1885 — Rosenlaui
Wednesday. 12th August [1885]. Lord Aberdare & his girls left Rosenlaui. Henry took me out in the morning & installed me in one of Lord Monkswell’s sketching shanties. Mrs Ball sat with me for a while & then Mr Ball took her place. While I was talking to him Mrs Kemble came up & said in a loud tone “Talk no secrets for I shall be sitting here,” & then she took her place in the shade at the back of us. When she rose to go she came round to our side & wished me success & I told her I feared none was in store for me as I had chosen too difficult a task. She turned to go & suddenly returning said “Lady Layard do you remember what Horace Walpole said?”—on my saying no she answered that he once declared that “there was nothing so pleasant in playing cards as winning except in losing” & she made me a bow & went off. I came in to lunch but having a headache had to lie down all the rest of the afternoon & even got worse at night & was very sick–
