14 October 1885 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 14th October [1885]. Mr & Mrs Ball left us by 12 oclock train & went to Florence. Lord Dunmore came to lunch & he & Henry & I went afterwards to call on Mr Malcolm, we found him sitting for his portrait to Mr Vigor; we left Ld D. there and went on to call on Lord & Lady Hammond at the Britannia who have just arrived with their 3 daughters. Lady H. seemed rather old & childish. She was full of Lady Tenterdens broken off engagement to Mr Haggard. He was our secy at Madrid & from what we knew of him we were much astonished to hear of it. She is now a widow for the 2nd time & he a vulgar queer man. I went to see General de Horsey with Henry. He is quite blind & looks very ill– I found him lying in a chaise longue by a fire & in a very comfortless looking room. He was very cheerful & glad to see me. We dined upstairs in the library & had a quiet evening. Played cribbage.
