12 November 1885 — Rome
Thursday. 12th November [1885]. Henry & I drove out in the morning at 10.30 & went to fetch Signor Lanciani who accompanied us to the Forum & showed us all the recent excavations & discoveries, the principal being the site & foundations of the house of the Vestal Virgins which he described to us most minutely. He afterwards took us to the Palatine where we saw the bronze statue of Bacchus found in the Tiber which today was set up on its feet & nearby the restorations quite finished. Then to the Ara cali to a magazine of objects discovered & are there deposited until such time as the new Museum is built. Of these magazines there are now 17 different ones in various quarters of the city quite full. We returned to lunch & afterwards I rested a little until Sir John’s lawn tennis party began abt 3.30 when I went down to the garden & talked to Mrs Kennedy & some of the foreign secretaries & their wives who came to play. Had tea in the stair-hall. At 7.30 Sir John had a large dinner party in honour of the new Minister for F.A. Genl Robilant & his wife. The Dutch Minister & Mme de Westenberg, The German Ambr & Mrs Rendell &c &c in all 20. The Russian Ambr M. [illegible word] took me in & Signor Malvano of the F.O. sat on my right. We dined in the state dining room. The dinner was good & well served.
