1 January 1887 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 1st January [1887]. I had a busy morning writing & made Henry some cigarettes. Guggenheim & Biraghi came to wish us the Happy New Year. I went out in gondola after lunch. Called on Mrs Bronson & found her at home & alone & I sat chatting with her for a long time. I then went to Mme Hurtado whom I found out of bed for the first time since her accident—looking pale & worn– Several people were there so I only stayed a few minutes. Mr & Mrs Du Garé came to see us. Wrote letters. Played patience with Henry before dinner. Emily Reitzenstein dined with us & we went to the Fenice to see Mephistofele–& I liked the music even better than the first time. We went to Malcolm’s box. Weather fine & not very cold–
