30 April 1887 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 30th [April 1887]. Busy morning putting out hangings in preparation for the K & Queens arrival at 1. Henry took Ola & Nela to see the town all decorated. I & Katie Colnaghi stayed at home & received Lady Aylesford, Mrs Brown & Mr Brown, Lady Cunyngham (I.C.S. as she signs herself i.e. Imperial star of India) & the Bosanquets. Abt 2 the royal party came in sight accompanied by bright coloured bissoni manned by 12 rowers in costume—& a great many gala gondolas with 4 rowers. There was the Mocenigo S. Samuele gondola with Mlle Mocenigo & her sister the Dss of Noci. It was light blue satin & the men in blue cloth liveries with lace & cocked hats. Css Sormani Morelli had her gondola entirely covered with green velvet with gold ornaments. Css Morosini her daughter in law—had blue velvet. Css Albrizzi had 2 gala gondolas. Some of the rich Jews had gala gondolas. Jesurum the lace vendor had a bissone with blue velvet & old laces & was rowed by 2 men & 2 women in blue satin trimmed with old lace. The royal gondoliers had red liveries. Treves the Jew banker had a gondola painted blue & the carving on it was gilt. A Jew living at the Spinelli Palace opposite us had his gondola entirely covered with red velvet. The procession swept by us making a delicious swish in the water & the effect of the brilliant colours was very lovely. The hangings in the windows & the flags waving from every house added to the effect. At 2 we had lunch & then went out to the Piazza & afterwards took a row up the Canal & back. After dinner Henry took out Nela & the Colnaghis. Ola & I played patience & went to bed early.
