2 May 1887 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 2nd May [1887]. Today at 2 oclock the Artistia Exhibition in the public garden were opened. We had tickets to go to the concert Hall where a platform was raised for the K & Q & speeches to be made. Henry was invited to the platform & I & the girls found places with the Mocenigos. Once there was a false start, the band struck up the Royal March & the King & Q. had not arrived so they had to stop amidst roars of laughter. When they did come there were some speeches & then the Exhibition was declared open & the K & Q went officially round the Exhibition & we went to see a few things & then went on to the terrace to see the K. & Q. go off in their state barge surrounded by the gala gondolas & bissoni. The Mocenigo of S. Samuele had covered their gondola with roses & had blue satin fittings to the gondola. Others were entirely covered with velvets & satins of the colours of the liveries of their houses. We were glad to get home & have some tea. We dined early & went to the Gala representation of Giaconda at the Fenice. The house was not at all full on account of the extravagant prices of the places. The entrance alone was 10 fcs a head & boxes 500 & 600 fcs & stalls 70 & 80. Their Majesties arrived abt 10.30 & only stayed a short time. The Q. looked very tired. It was a pretty sight to see the whole house rise when they came in & when they left. They were very much applauded.
