8 September 1887 — Talygarn, nr. Llantrisant, Glamorgan
Thursday. 8th [September 1887]. Henry & Mr Clark & I went by train to Cardiff to see Lord & Lady Bute at the Castle. They received us very kindly & we went out on to the lawn where Lord Bute was digging for the foundations of an old Monastery & he had found several traces. The fine old castle beautifully restored & decorated stands in the midst of the dirty town of Cardiff. Outside the walls grow vines wh Lord B. declares yield good wine– As soon as you drive into the gates you find a lovely park & gardens & a fine house. We lunched there & Lord Bute (who eat enormously) drank out of a jewelled cup. The eldest Lady Margaret who is slightly deformed is a most interesting child. She is the father’s darling & he takes special pride in her education & altho’ only abt 8 years old she speaks modern Greek perfectly. She was dressed in soft white silk—& had a pearl necklace & bracelets & her light hair flowing over her back hid her slight deformity. After lunch the Butes took us for a drive thro’ the park to Castle Koch an old Welsh castle restored by Lord Bute– It is beautifully situated on the side of a thickly wooded hill & well restored the only fault being that in his “vert” zeal he has put an Italian figure of the Madonna & Child over the gateway. The interior is being decorated & painted. We had tea there & then they drove us back to the station & we returned to Taly Garn. We met at the Butes an old Miss Skene who said she was a cousin of Mrs Forbes Brown of Venice & had known her when she was young & a great beauty.
