17 September 1888 — Milton Court, nr. Dorking, Surrey
Monday. 17th [September 1888]. In the morning Mrs Rate took us & Emilia Riaño off to Loseley a long drive beyond Guildford to lunch with Lord & Lady Sligo. The house belongs to Mr Molyneux who being a batchelor & too poor to live in the house lets it & lives himself in a cottage in the garden when he comes to the country as he being a clerk in the H. of Commons is much in town. We found Mme & Mlle de Peyronnet staying with the Sligos & Mr & Mrs Charles (their cousins) & 2 ladies Brown. Isabel Sligo was delighted to see us & friendly & pleasant. Lord Sligo seemed very infirm. The twin girls of 5 years of age very pretty little things. The house is a very fine one. There is a fine old hall with a gallery on one side & the windows of the bedrooms open into it. On the other wing are fine drawing rooms & state bed rooms. Q. Elisabeth stayed in the house with the present owners’ ancestors & the Mores & there is a curious & interesting picture of her aged 65 then. In the library are preserved many curious MSS. The Mores had been Sheriff & in high employ & there are preserved papers & warrants &c with curious signatures—amongst them some of Lady Jane Grey signed “Jane the Queen.” Mr Molyneux happening to call while we were there he very kindly opened the cases & showed us the curios. We went over the house & the old fashioned gardens—had tea & at 4.30 set off to drive home to Milton. In Guildford we stopped at 2 old furniture shops & bought a few trifles. One shop is the largest & most rambly place I ever saw. It is celebrated. We saw nothing very fine there. I bought an old table to give away. We got home just about dark.
