26 December 1888 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 26th December [1888]. Woke with a headache & so tired that I breakfasted in bed & Nela came to breakfast with me. Dora & Ola breakfasted in their bed—& the only one who got up was Henry. Nela & I lay & talked & read & I played the guitar & we made parodies on songs—& only got up for lunch. Stayed at home very tired. At 5 a visit from Olga Mocenigo. After dinner I picked up & we all went to the Fenice Mr Malcolm having given us his box for the opening night. The Opera was “Carmen” very well acted by a woman called de Vita—but her voice was too small– A good tenor, but the baritone was hissed as he sang out of tune. He had been a fine singer & a great favorite here but is old now & the fickle public was merciless. We did not get home till long past 12. Dora dined with Lady Galway & went with her to the Opera—so we invited Olga the young Pss of Montenegro to dinner & took her to the opera with us.
