12 November 1889 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 12th November [1889]. Having received tickets for the steamer going to meet the Emperor of Germany the 3 girls got Miss Holas to take them & set off at 10 returning at lunch time. The weather held up a little & there were gleams of sun. I painted & began to copy Henry’s article for the Q.R. on Hawkwood. Did not go out. Henry went with Sir Fred Burton. Mr Brown came to call & brought Mr Allen a friend staying with him & while they were here the procession of the Emp. & Empress of Germany passed to the station. With Bucentaur & bissoni a pretty sight but it was very cold—the wished for cold seems to have come & we may hope for fine weather. I had a fire in the studio for the first time this year. Read aloud before dinner. Sir Fred took the 3 girls on the Piazza to see the illuminations & hear the bands all in honor of the Empress—the Emperor having left for Monza. Henry & I remained at home & played patience.
