21 May 1890 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Wednesday. 21st [May 1890]. I was better when I woke this morning & got up by 11. Mama came to see me in the morning to tell me that Blanche’s sale went off very well yesterday & that she made between £20 & £30 & was going to the sale again today. Just before dinner I went to Cavendish Square & found Blanche had sold £20 today & had got a lot of orders. Monty came to lunch & Fred returned for it. Ola lunched out & so did Henry who went into the city but returned home before we had finished. Signor Smargiassi came in to discuss a scheme for promoting fan painting in London. I went with Monty to call on Mrs Lyssen Amherst who are now living at Chandos House just opposite us. Her daughters are very clever & one of them took a prize at the Fan Exhibition. They showed us a photo of the ceiling they have painted in their bed room in the country– They also photograph very well. I returned home to wait for the Dr Mr Smith who examined my cyst & thought it slightly increased—& said he would not decide as to whether it shd [be] removed until I had consulted Sir James Paget– He himself thought it ought to be done but remembering how long I had been ill last year he shrank from doing it. As we have finally decided to go to Milton to stay with the Rates for Whitsuntide he advise[d] me to consult Sir James on my return to town. Fred & I had tea together & Maria came afterwards. Henry & Ola went to a musical party at Miss Duff Gordon’s this afternoon & heard Mme Reyntiens sing with a daughter of Grisi & Marcos. I had a long visit from Mr & Mrs Morgan Foster of Constantinople. He was for years Director of the Ottoman Bank there. He is a dear old man—pleasant & benevolent. She a funny looking old lady with white hair & face—no figure & dresses oddly. She gave me a lot of Constantinople news & gossip. When they were gone I walked to 17 Cav. Sqr & finding my mother was dining alone asked her to come & dine with Fred & me. Henry dined at the official dinner at Ld Salisbury’s on H.M. Birthday. Ola dined with her own people 25 Park Crescent.
