14 September 1890 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 14th September [1890]. Got up as usual at 7. Sent to see whether there was any church service. Answer that there were none. Wrote letters & read– Was sitting in my bedroom when Mrs Browning arrived. She came straight from the church saying she had gone there on the chance of a service—had met a clergyman there & asked him to do the service which consented to do– A large congregation amongst them Mr W. H. Smith & party from yacht “Pandora” & 96 fcs collected which she brought to me. A great many people had gone to 8 o’cl service & found the doors closed—& everybody was indignant at Mr Jamesons absence. It really is too bad. The clergyman who performed morning service promised to do it again at 3.30– We lunched at 1.30 & I went over to speak to Ct Seckendorff abt the journey to Valmarino on Wedy. They ask nearly 1000 fcs for a special train so H.M. says she will not have it & wd rather start by 5.15 AM– At 3 Lady Elizabeth Biddulph & Miss Adeane called but stayed a very short time as they were to fetch the Empress to go to church. Henry went off to call on Mr W. H. Smith & on to the Murano regatta with 3 Du Cane girls. Mrs Browning fetched me to church. Found the Empress already there—very small congregation. I played a hymn for the offertory. Walked afterwards to see Mrs Bronson—part of the way went with a gentleman who had read the lessons & his wife who seemed by their talk to be city people & to be acquainted with the Empress Frederick. I did not find Mrs Bronson—& could not get the Eden’s bell answered. I went to enquire when they were coming as they had not arrived last night as expected– The road to Zoldo being carried away by inundations they will have to go round by a path & Mr Eden will have to be carried as he cannot walk. The cyclone of a fortnight ago in the valley of Zoldo has done immense mischief & carried away nearly the whole village of Dort—14 persons were drowned in one house wh was carried away. Walked home to traghetto S. Benefotto & was ferried across. Visit from Mr Hare (Ld Listowels brother) F.O. messenger whom we had known at Consple. He came from Ld Salisbury with despatches for Mr Smith. Read aloud to Henry before dinner. Dined at 7.30. Girls went out after dinner. Patience.
