16 September 1890 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 16th September [1890]. At 11.30 went with Henry in gondola to the Eden’s garden to see the picture the Empress is painting. A view of the dome of the Redentore church with the cypresses & flowers—a very powerfully coloured picture & beautifully drawn. Henry sat & talked to H.M. while I walked about with Css Bruhl & picked flowers for H.M. sitting room. Came home by 1 & I went over to see Ct Seckendorff & arrange abt tomorrows journey; we decided to start at 10.50 & return by evening train so I telegraphed to the Brandolins. Ola went out in the morning in gondola with Mme Noce & Daisy & Nela with the Princesses went on board the Pandora. We lunched at 1.30 & after lunch had a visit from Mr Meadows White & his sister & 2 daughters. The Princesses sent over to say they wanted the girls so at 4 we took them over there & left them & Henry & I went on together to the Stabto to see the girls working at the mosaic pavement for the Gaekwar of Baroda’s bed room– Saw Sr Edwin Benuzzi who has been very ill with a paralytic stroke altho’ a man of 27 but is much recovered– We went on to the Brazzoduro garden on the Giudecca where I bought flowers in pots & brought them home with us. Had tea in my room & was just going to read to Henry when they came to say the 2 Princesses had come with the Du Cane girls so I went down & they stayed till 7 talking. Ola played the mandola to them & I the guitar. We dined at 7.30 & Mr Moore, Lady Elizabeth Biddulph & Miss Adeane dined with us– At 9 our gondola went across & fetched the Princess & Ct Wedell. Mme Bruhl brought them & left them. Then we all sang. Miss Adeane sings well & Pss Victoria—& Ct Wedell & we tried choruses & duetts without very much success. Henry slipped off early to bed, the rest remained till nearly 11 when Css Bruhl returned & carried off her charges. When they were going Pss Victoria looking at our bedroom candles said “oh what short pieces of candle,” on my explaining that we used the ends of candles she said “Oh I must do the same when I marry & I want to learn to carve; can you carve a chicken & may I come over & train”!
