12 August 1891 — Milton Court, nr. Dorking, Surrey
Wednesday. 12th August [1891]. We hear that the Lambeth party lost their train last night & had to wait for a later one—thus not getting to their homes till midnight. Of the party there was one very respectable looking old man of 72 who said he had never been in the real country before– He had charge of a church in London—& had once been in the suburbs of London. When asked what he thought of it he said it was more beautiful than he cd have imagined. I breakfasted in bed & came down late. We lunched at 1—& then we started off for our visit to Lord Selborne. We went by train from Dorking to Guilford where we had an hour to wait. Henry & I took a stroll up the High Street which is very picturesque & returned to the station took the train for Liss where we were met by the Blackmoor carriage & found Sophy & her father at tea & staying there a Mr Robert Murray– His daughter Mrs Pemberton was there but she left directly after tea. There were also staying there Honble & Rev Noel Waldegrave, Sophy’s cousin a young parson– The house is modern built by Ld Selborne very comfortable & well built, & stands in a very pretty country. We walked about the gardens before dinner. After dinner there was whist—& I played Halma with Mr Waldegrave.
