8 January 1892 — Ca’ Capello, Venice | |
Friday. 8th January [1892]. Painted fan. Went out with Henry in afternoon to Eden’s garden & took a walk there. The weather still damp & dull & there is a great deal of Influenza about. By advice of Sir Henry Thompson we began to fumigate with carbolic against it. Ida Bel: came to tea & stayed a long time talking. We had a dinner party consisting of the English Commissioners to the Sanitary Commission for Egypt wh is now assembled here—Mr James Lowther, Mr Farnall (of the F.O.) & Dr Mackie & his wife. Mr Lowther is the present under secy for Foreign Affairs—an M.P. & son of Mr Lowther of Lowther Lodge—a young man—good looking & of good manners. Dr Mackie is a Dr at Cairo a tall powerful looking man of middle age. His wife younger dark & handsome but not distinguished looking. We had also to dinner Mr Malcolm, Mr Brown, Pss Olga of Montenegro, Miss Clara Montalba & Miss Scobell– Mr Hodgson & Mr Woods came in the eveng. | |
