8 September 1892 — Blackmoor, nr. Liss, Hampshire
Thursday. 8th [September 1892]. Drove over with Henry, Lord Selborne & Sophy to see the Tennysons at                and lunched with them. We did not see the poet laureate until lunch time & when we went to table found him sitting in his high back arm chair propped up with pillows & with a kind of bib on. He greeted us all but we were shocked to see how ill & altered he was looking & he took little part in the conversation. Mr & Mrs Hallam took the ends of the table. Before we had finished our lunch Tennyson, who eat little & of a dish specially prepared for him, rose & left the table. As he went out he said something to Hallam about me calling me “Lady Layard.” I said “oh Lord Tennyson why not call me ‘Enid’ we have not come to that have we?” He then brightened up smiled & said “You must remember I only spoke of not to you.” After lunch Lady T was out in her perambulator in a sunny spot in the garden & I sat by & talked with her & soon after we left. On our return we found old Jowett or “the Master” as they call him arrived to stay at Blackmoor. He is very old & venerable looking & rather tottering– He was kind & genial to me. Mr & Mrs Lushington dined.
