8 December 1894 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 8th December [1894]. The weather cleared at last & the sun shone again. Ola & I spent the morning pasting in newspaper cuttings. Edith Bronson was to have taken Ola to the Rossini to hear Massenet’s Marion & came to say the opera was changed to Carmen. We made her stop to luncheon & then I went out with her. Ola went to the choir practise. I & Edith went to her mother’s house & found her just getting in to her gondola—so we rowed across to the Eden’s garden & walked & got a few late roses. As Mrs Bronson & I were walking on the sacca we heard the report of a gun & then heard small shot falling round us. I ran towards the direction of the report & spied 2 boys in the next garden with a gun with which they were evidently shooting at small birds & I called to them to desist & be more careful, after which we were able to walk in peace. Edith & I went to the Zattere & walked there & I asked her about the reports that Count Rucellai wanted to marry her. She said it was so but she had not made up her mind whether to accept him—but from what she said I think she will do so. I am afraid he is mercenary & wants her money. We walked back to her house where I left her & returned in the gondola. Clara & Hilda Montalba came to see me & Hilda & Ola went off to the Frari where there was a service but got there too late. Clara remained with me till they returned.
