27 April 1895 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 27th April [1895]. Mr Armstrong of the Irish Nat. Gallery came to see our pictures. Later I had a visit from Countess Brandolin who was very kind & sympathetic & then Iduna Belmondo so that by lunch time I had done no work. Mme Villari & Mrs Hulton came to tea & also Clara & Hilda Montalba & Elaine & I took them out for a row round by the station & Giudecca & their own house on the Zattere. It was a wild looking eveng & there were piles of black grand looking clouds & lighting dancing through them from time to time but we got home abt 7.30 without rain. I found on my return home that Cortelazzo has arrived to stay a few days. We had hardly begun dinner when the storm broke over the city tremendous rain which turned into hail & sheets of lightening, the water of the canals seemed churned up & was quite white & seething; we heard the hail rattling on the windows, many of which were cracked & the maids shrieking in terror. We knew that many of my window plants would be broken & cut to pieces. It did not last long & the silence afterwards was curious.
