23 July 1895 — Devonshire House, Weymouth
Tuesday. 23rd July [1895]. I went by the 10.10 train to Wimborne & walked over to Canford to see the monument just put up for Henry. His ashes brought from Woking are deposited under it & there I hope mine also will be. I read over & over again the inscription trying to realize that all the remained of him on earth is this—but it seemed impossible. I sat a long time in the church porch & tried to take it in– I went on the Nineveh Porch & looked at the astonishing Assyrian sculptures of his finding & then I wandered away in the park & sat under the great old chestnut tree & eat my luncheon & then walked up the Queen’s (Adelaides) walk. At 4 I went off to walk back to the station. I stopped at Mrs Hayes Lodge gates & went in & had tea with her. She is a dear old lady—a real gentlewoman. Dressed in nice black with a little tippet to match buttoned down over her chest– A black cap tied under the chin & flat curls against each cheek. She gave me an excellent tea—nice white bread & butter—tea in an old fashioned stone tea pot. All on a spotless white cloth & she talked nicely & kindly of all my family & with affection. I left by 5.30 train & got back at 6.30 to Weymouth travelling with a nice talkative old lady. The day was fine & Canford looked lovely. The family was away in London–
