5 October 1895 — Inwood, Henstridge, Somerset
Saturday. 5th October [1895]. Augusta & I went off by 9.30 train for Templecombe to see Wells Cathedral. We had to change trains twice but we got there under 2 hours. We walked from the station to the cathedral & went all over it under the care of a verger—it is a fine church but the whole place looked melancholy & damp & the verger said—“Yes it is damp & when people come here they mostly go all to pieces—but they get over it after a time!” The cloisters are beautiful & then I found the grave of Richard Du Cane’s brother Arthur. We looked into the garden of the Bishop’s Palace. It is very picturesque but the moat round the walls made it look very damp. We went to the Angel Inn & got some cold beef for lunch & then returned to the cathedral & sketched. We went also to some curious old houses & while Augusta sketched I talked to the landlady of a little Inn close by; she said she had been in America & would like to go back there because—no man would ever think of passing a remark on a lady—& there was no difference of classes there—anyone might go & sit by the side of the President’s lady in the train– I asked her if she did not find she had to keep her own servants in their places—at wh she said yes & how forward & idle they were becoming—showing the good lady does not care for this equality except in theory. We went from there to the church of St which is of fine proportions & then we went on to the station & took the train for Glastonbury about 10 minutes by rail. We got into a bus & drove to the little town as we had only abt 1½ hour to spend there. Great was our delight at the stately ruins. They are in the gardens of a modern house but are open to the public on a small fee. The length of the church seems enormous when standing under the wall of the east end & looking down. It must have been a splendid building. The little town of Glastonbury looked bright & pleasant. There are many nice old houses & the place looked far more flourishing than Wells. We got an excellent cup of tea at a small inn & then the bus conveyed us back to the station but we found we had 40 minutes to wait for the Templecombe train so we made a sketch of the house & the Tar hill. We got back to Inwood for dinner rather late & tired.
