7 October 1895 — Inwood, Henstridge, Somerset
Monday. 7th [October 1895]. Augusta & I went by train to Wimborne to see the old Minster. I had not seen it for so long that I had forgotten it & I had never seen the library with its chained books. We walked from there to Canford & Mrs Whimp gave us luncheon in the new wing. I took Augusta to the churchyard to see Henry’s grave. We had chosen the spot together in the summer. Maria, Richard & their girl Isabel who had come over from Bournemouth to lunch at the Rectory came to meet us after lunch & we walked in the gardens together & picked flowers. At 4.30 we had tea & then went back to the station– The Du Canes returned to Bournemouth, Augusta & I to Inwood. At Wimborne station we met Dr Wiblin who was returning from Inwood. He told us he had performed a small operation on Merthyr’s injured leg successfully. We got back to Inwood for dinner & found 2 guests arrived Mr Ted Gould & Miss Grey. He an old friend of Merthyrs—she a new friend & queer to look at. Hair dyed golden—painted powdered scented & overdressed. Count Larios & M F. H. of Gibraltar was also there. He sat next me at dinner but did not contribute much to conviviality—tho he spoke perfect English. We had rather a heavy eveng.
