5 November 1895 — 3 Savile Row
Tuesday. 5th [November 1895]. Eda & I had a hard days work of arranging & putting up books & only stopped for luncheon so that by tea time we were quite exhausted. The Duncannons & Nela Du Cane returned this morning from Ireland. Nela & Daisy came to tea. The Duns: & Onie dined with us & Blanche saw this house for the first time since I came here & was pleased with it. It looks nice now it is clean. The large drawing room is lined with plain striped pink paper & all the Austen pictures, Morland, Harding, Melscher &c look very well on them & our furniture is better seen than before. My bedroom is distempered light red & the paint white—& the hangings &c are white chintz– The library is distempered pink & holds all Henry’s books well. The dining room all painted with wood grained & varnished & has gilt mouldings. This is just as it has been since the time the house belonged to Ld Mornington. Monty’s rooms are on the 2nd floor. We have put in electric light every where.
