22 November 1895 — 3 Savile Row
Friday. 22nd November [1895]. Worked all morning sorting & arranging papers. Miss Hogarth came to see me abt 12.30 & we had a long talk before luncheon & she left at 3. She told me of Miss (Memie) Dickens severe illness & seems to fear she is dying. Lady (Blanche) Lindsay came to see me & then Augusta Gregory came & we went off together to the Board School in Southwark to the children’s “Happy Eveng” & helped to amuse them. Mrs Hill the head mistress gave us tea & she & I had a long talk & she told me some of her troubles & of her life. How she had had a bad father & had to work for him & her mother since she was 18. Her father died 2 years ago & now her mother has gone quite blind & so her troubles seem unending. It was hard to find comfort for her. Came home in a hansom about 7. Dined at 17 Cav Sqr.
