12 March 1896 — Villa Pisani, Vescovana
Thursday. 12th [March 1896]. Lovely weather. The Countess sent Eda & me on an expedition to Gemola one of the Euganean hills on which stands the convent founded by the Beata Beatrice of Este. We had a long drive till we reached a village called Valle & thence we had a stiff climb up to the top. We stopped on the way & had our lunch out of a basket we had with us & which we hired a boy to carry. The Css’s gardener Biscoccio also accompanied us to dig up roots if we found any. We found the convent is now turned into a farm & a very civil young farmer with his wife, a good looking couple, welcomed us. They had only been there a few months & did not know much abt the country. On going down the hill on the other side we came up a bank of blue hepatica anemones & a couple of plants of the white. We stopped to get some roots which Biscoccio put into a bag he had brought & we afterwards walked back to Valle & got our carriage to return to Vescovana– We walked on while the horses were being put to & found snowdrops in the hedges wh we grubbed up & carried off. We got back to Vescovana before 6 & had tea & exhibited our treasures. I sent Bertha on to Venice today to meet the rest of the servants who having been declared free from the infection of measles had now to arrive at Venice early this morning.
