22 May 1896 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 22nd [May 1896]. Being without any gondolier we had to walk today & we went in the afternoon to the Giudecca & there took the traghetto & went across to the Eden’s garden to see the Edens & look after a boy I had heard of as 2nd gondolier. He is brother to Gigia a boy we had 3 or 4 years ago I had a good acct of him & engaged him for 2 fcs a day without food. Another man was recommended as 1st gondolier & I engaged him on trial for 2½ fcs.
