11 July 1896 — Villa Mier, Belluno
Saturday. 11th July [1896]. Copied MS. We had our breakfasts in our own rooms & Sophy went out for an early walk. After lunch Sophy read aloud to me. Tea at 4.30 & at 5 we went for a drive in a little open carriage. We went to Belluno & on the road to Longarone & back by a round to Belluno. A thunderstorm came on before we got back & continued some time. It cooled the air wonderfully as it had been a heavy scirocco. Yesterday I got a telegram from Clara Montalba “Little Polly lively & strong”—so the Parrots have evidently hatched & are succeeding with their breeding arrangements. It will be a triumph to have reared young parrots in Europe. In the evening I read aloud to Sophy some of Cortelazzo’s MS wh amused her much.
