17 August 1896 — Villa Mier, Belluno
Monday. 17th August [1896]. We all had breakfast at 7.30 & by 8.30 started for a driving tour Mr & Mrs Curtis, Sophy & I by Bosco de Conseglio to Vittorio. We had a landau with 2 horses from the Port Master at Belluno & drove to a hamlet near the Lake of S. Croce called Ferro where we had had 2 extra horses ordered. They were not forthcoming for some time & after the delay of an hour they came & the ascent to Conseglio began. We wound up & up always above the lake for abt 4 hours when we reached a lovely plateau with churches & villages—till we came to the forest & “Palazzo” where the Govt forester lives. There we had to stay an hour for the horses to rest. We made ourselves some tea & walked about. From Palazzo which is a curious green basin surrounded by fine forest trees we went a little way thro’ the forest till suddenly we found ourselves on the edge of the descent to the plain & here a most glorious view. The day was very fine & we could see for miles—to Venice & the sea– The near hills looked like waves or ant hills. The descent was rapid & we got down to Vittorio in about 3 hours. We just stopped at the Hotel Vittorio to deposit Mr & Mrs Curtis who stayed there & Sophy & I drove on to Cison to stay at Valmarino with the Brandolins. It was past 8 oclock when we got there & the family had already dined but they fed us & sent us early to bed—as we were tired. Count Brandolin was away at Venice.
